As part of an academic medical center, patients and care teams have access to the most advanced, evidence-based care for the diagnosis and management of complex dermatologic diseases. At each visit, you'll benefit from multiple levels of evaluation because you are seen by both faculty and resident physicians. The combination of research, education and experience makes a high level of care possible.

About dermatology

Diseases of the skin affect everyone from newborns to adults. A dermatologist is a doctor who is specifically trained to diagnose and treat skin disorders. This includes conditions that may affect the skin and hair. Dermatology physicians and surgeons at The University of Kansas Health System diagnose and treat common, rare and complex conditions of the skin, including skin cancer.

Dermatology services

  • Our dermatologists collaborate with other specialists at the health system to treat people with burns and other skin injuries, including frostbite, severe dermatitis, abrasions and more. Our accredited burn center provides comprehensive inpatient care for people with complex burns and wounds.

  • We offer a complete range of advanced tests and treatments, including topical and ultraviolet therapies, total skin electron beam radiation therapy, extracorporeal photopheresis and systemic treatments like bone marrow transplant. Consultations are offered at the Medical Pavilion, KU MedWest, Quivira Medical Pavilion and through teleheatlh.

  • When you want to refresh your appearance without surgery or downtime, nonsurgical aesthetic services can help. We offer all of today's most trusted and proven treatments, including injectables like BOTOX® Cosmetic, dermal fillers, laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels and more.

  • We offer comprehensive treatments for psoriasis, including narrow-band phototherapy and systemic biologic agents. Our interdisciplinary approach allows us to coordinate your treatment with other specialties, such as rheumatology and gastroenterology.

  • Skin cancer is becoming more common, but it can be challenging to get an appointment with a general dermatologist for routine screenings. That’s why the health system now accepts referrals for undiagnosed legions and requests for biopsy. You can see the Mohs surgery and dermatology oncology specialty team at the health system based on a high-risk assessment from your primary care provider, dentist, eye specialist or other clinician.

If a lesion is cancerous, our dermatologists provide expert care and treatment for melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers. Our advanced treatments include photodynamic therapy to treat basal and squamous cell carcinomas. We also offer Mohs surgery, as well as skin cancer reconstruction surgery.

  • For those who need dermatology care related to a transplant, The University of Kansas Health System offers a complete range of treatments – including extracorporeal photopheresis for graft-versus-host disease, as well as treatments for transplant-associated squamous cell carcinoma.
